“The Life & Lineage of King Gesar of Ling:
Enlightened Warriorship in Difficult Times”
A Weekend Program with Changling Rinpoche
Friday, May 9, 2008, 7:00 am to 9:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday, May 10 & 11, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
We are honored to welcome Changling Rinpoche of Shechen Monastery on his first visit to the Berkeley Shambhala Center.
Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche has said that while Shakyamuni Buddha is a Buddha for the Hinayana and the Mahayana, and Padmasambhava is a Buddha for the Vajrayana, the enlightened warrior king Gesar of Ling is a Buddha for Shambhala. Indeed, the Druk Sakyong Trungpa Rinpoche dedicated his first “Shambhala book” (Shambhala, the Sacred Path of the Warrior) to Gesar of Ling.
Although enlightenment is sometimes depicted as an expression of ease, it also involves overcoming obstacles, as well as fearlessness in placing obstacles on the path, and constancy in doing so for the benefit of beings. King Gesar incarnated at a time when Tibet and the Dharma were threatened by evil kings of four regions surrounding Ling, who represented the forces of materialism. Even before subduing these forces, Gesar had to overcome many obstacles just to take his rightful seat as the king of Ling. The life of King Gesar an example of enlightened warriorship, toward the purpose of creating enlightened society.

Rechungpa met the Kagyu saint Milarepa at the age of eleven and spent many years studying and practicing under the guidance of his teacher. At one time he was married to a local princess before taking to the homeless life of a wandering yogin. Rechungpa travelled to India three times and obtained teachings and transmissions which Marpa had not managed to receive in his time. In particular he received the entire “nine-fold cycle of the formless Dakinis” and upon Rechungpa's return to Tibet, he presented these teachings to Milarepa. While a brilliant student Rechungpa also struggled with his pride but went on to found the Rechung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
This public day-long program on the life and teachings of Rechungpa will be led by Changling Rinpoche, a lineage holder of Rechungpa's tradition.
